I've always been stubborn. When I was a kid, my favorite phrase was "I Do", and I become more assertive with age.
I am also an alumnus. So when I decided to play seriously with fiber, I started reading everything I could find about it. I started with teddy bears, placed on blankets and bedspreads Crazy, then, embroidery and needle and by Kaffe Fassett, then knit, then the hook.
I fell madly in love with hook for three years, until my wrist was completed. (Fortunately, it is finally beginning to recover.) Wild child I was spinning a spindle and spinning drop as it usually discussed with the fabric, I found myself playing simple frame looms. Although I'm not promiscuous, now I love the spinning and weaving as much as I love crochet.
I would not have done it without my expensive books and magazines. With the exception of a few kinds of Needlepoint and hook of the conference, I learned everything I know about printing of three videotapes.
To be taught ... Before falling in love with the thread, I was a passionate teacher. I spent some of the best moments of my life in a classroom, usually as a teacher and sometimes as a student.
But the problem with schools and classes is that they are fundamentally conservative. They exist to transmit previous knowledge, and are also used, sometimes violently, to socialize students. Unless the professor is truly remarkable, students learn a or the other to think like the teacher or rebel, like other rebels.
The same is true for classes of fiber is less formal. The woman who taught these classes sewing are taught to become dependent. We each bought a different picture, then choose the fiber, and tell us to put this point. N point guide no discussion of conception, not even a mention of the glorious history of tapestry - just "doing here."
The hook of fun conference was much more. What better way to spend a weekend of three days with hundreds of others who share your obsession? I also had the great pleasure of spending all my time in class with the brilliant British crocheters, Sylvia Cosh and James Walters. These are two outstanding teachers I have mentioned before - even if they teach the techniques have developed smoothly also encourage individual experimentation. Only his close work was enough to send home some inspiration!
But this was a conference sponsored by a union, and officials stood by their party line. They wanted to move quickly hook in the vocational area and artistic, but since I am a populist at heart, I would reduce competition and increase the conclusion of the work of all. When I dared to say publicly, I won the President mortal enmity.
Growth not get me wrong - I think that professionalism is admirable and sublime art. But I also believe that competition is brutal, and I expected a modern guild does not want to encourage and celebrate all its members.
I Should Have Known Better. The groups are conservative by nature and exist to serve the interests of the people who run them.

They become independent when it absorbs as much as creative we can and then go on to develop our own ways of working. In his wonderful spiritual journey, she says she is baffled by the way that women in such creative, using virtually all known techniques knitting to make beautiful and striking pieces.
There really is no mystery, of course. These women are so good at home with the point, so well qualified and trust, is second nature for them to knit as they are.
Think you know chefs. At one point following the recipes, like the rest of us, and many of them, read cookbook is a lifestyle. But they are so experienced that they can take a little of this and a little of this and get a delicious meal with little effort.
It seems that ... Because what we see is a reflection that happens. And this is key - we are first so skilled that our technique is almost automatic, so you can put most of our efforts to the analysis.
When I say "think" really talk about the creative process. It can be as fast as skip a meal with leftovers or as complex as designing and sewing a quilt. What matters is that we become Martha Stewart, Nancy Crow, but we found a genuine way of expressing ourselves.
This is the joy of creative independence.
It is also a joy to be alive.
